Often, students who take Chemistry in the IBDP lament at just how difficult this subject can be. Not surprisingly, when it comes to crunch time, many stress over their grades for this subject. There are 3 papers to take in the examination and with the May 2024 exams fast approaching, we will explore Paper 2 here and provide some strategies to help you excel in it.

The Structure:
The IBDP Chemistry Paper 2 requires a sophisticated understanding of the core syllabus, with critical analysis to extend your knowledge. It includes short-answer and extended-response questions of intertwining skills, concepts and understandings placed within the context of Chemistry. Covering a spectrum of topics from the curriculum, the exam assesses your ability to engage with complex issues, articulate informed perspectives, and substantiate your arguments with evidence and examples.Â
Some Preparation Strategies:
- Focus on the core topics: The majority of the questions in Paper 2 come from the core topics in the syllabus. Be sure to have a solid grasp of these topics, as they will form the basis of your understanding for more complex questions. Conduct a thorough review of key concepts and theories within the curriculum.Â
- Utilise past papers: Â Practicing with past year papers will give you a feel for how the questions are structured and the level of difficulty you can expect on the actual test. Time yourself while answering these past papers to simulate exam conditions and build your test-taking endurance.Â
- Have a plan for calculations: Many questions in Paper 2 involve calculations, so make sure you have a good grasp of the formulas and constants you will need. Keep a formula sheet handy and practice using it while working through problems. This will help you become more comfortable and efficient when dealing with calculations during the exam.
- Review experimental design: Questions in Paper 2 might ask you to plan an experimental procedure or analyse given data. Be familiar with common lab techniques, equipment, and safety precautions. Make sure you are also comfortable with the process of identifying independent/dependent variables, as well as manipulating and interpreting data in various formats (tables, graphs, etc.).
- Stay organized: As you prepare, create summary sheets or flashcards for each topic to consolidate your understanding. Break down your study material into smaller, manageable chunks to make it easier to revise and identify gaps in your knowledge.
